Embedding a Calculator into ANGEL Exams

Instructions for adding a calculator to the top of a question set.

This method is used if you configure your exam as "question at a time". The calculator link will appear at the top of every question page.

  1. Open the exam and within the Question Set where you want to place the calculator, click the Question Set’s Configure link.
  2. When the “Question Set Settings” pop-up window appears, click the HTML Editor link just under the Heading text textbox area.
  3. Type the text for the link you wish to create (for example "Calculator" - without the quotes).
  4. Once the wording has been added, click and drag across the word/words to highlight it.
  5. Click on the "Insert/Edit Web Link" icon in the HTML tool bar (the icon that looks like Earth with a chain link). Click the icon, not the drop down arrow next to it.
  6. When the “Link” pop-up window appears, paste the following into the “URL” text box area: https://cms.psu.edu/portal/popup.asp?p_TS=30588&p_id=Calculator
  7. Next, click the Target tab.
  8. From the Target drop down menu, select "pop-up window".
  9. Click the "OK" button to close the "Link" pop-up window.
  10. Press the Save button to close the “Question Set Settings” pop-up window.
  11. Now, click the "Preview" link located at the top of the “Assessment Editor” section to preview the exam question. Test the link to make sure that it works properly.

Instructions for adding a calculator to an individual question.

This method is used when you configure your ANGEL assessment as "questions all at once". Due to security features built into the secure browser, the students cannot open the calculator and scroll through questions. You should provide them a calculator link for every question that requires its use.

  1. Within your exam, add a question. We are using a "True or False" question for this exercise—click on the "True or False" question link.
  2. From the “Question Editor” pop-up window, go to the "Question Text" text box and click on the "HTML Editor" link, located below the text box.
  3. Type the text for the link you wish to create (i.e., "Calculator", without the quotes).
  4. Once the wording has been added, click and drag across to highlight the word(s).
  10. Complete the question, answer, and assign points for the correct answer.
  11. Press the Save button to close the “Question Editor” pop-up window.
  12. Now, click the "Preview" link located at the top of the “Assessment Editor” section to preview the exam question. Test the link to make sure that it works properly.
